MHP internship programme builds on relationship with Lincoln University

National property management company MHP is building on its longstanding relationship with Lincoln University, through offering internship positions to property students.

Dale Robertson, MHP managing director, says the company greatly values Lincoln University’s contribution to the property industry through its degree courses, which equips students well for careers in the industry.

“We’re pleased to have strengthened our relationship with Lincoln through a formal internship programme. Recently we were fortunate to have Tim Welsh, a student of very high calibre, join us in our Christchurch office for three months.”

Through the MHP programme, students have the opportunity to work alongside experienced property management professionals, while gaining exposure to the many career opportunities across the property industry, Robertson says.

“What many students don’t realise is that a career in the property industry isn’t just about making a choice between valuation and property management. Through bringing students into our business, we’re aiming for them to raise awareness among their peers about the extremely varied career path that’s on offer in our industry.”

MHP is now looking to appoint another intern towards the end of 2019, and is also planning to offer a graduate position, he says.

Tim Welsh, a Lincoln University Bachelor of Land and Property Management student, has just completed a three-month internship programme with MHP, based primarily in the company’s Christchurch office but also doing week-long stints in MHP’s offices in Queenstown and Dunedin.

During his internship, Tim was involved in a wide variety of property management and facilities management tasks, including lease analysis, financial analysis, site inspections, producing reports, data analysis, contractor management and more.

“I’ve come away from MHP with a greatly improved industry knowledge and skill set. Being able to shadow experienced professionals as well as independently handling my own portfolio of work, from initial inspection to reporting stage, has developed my management and personal organisation skills greatly. I’ve also been able to gain first-hand experience of the current drivers of the property market,” Tim says.

The opportunity to be involved at the coal face of MHP’s operations was immensely valuable, says Tim.

“This experience has developed the person that I am, not just the knowledge I have. Being able to get out of the office independently to meet clients and inspect their properties has been a fantastic practical experience that you just can’t get from books and study. The professional networking and interpersonal skills I’ve gained through my MHP internship are just invaluable.”
